Three artists from Hawai‘i individually address issues informing abstraction in the 21st century.

Debra Drexler is professor of drawing and painting, UH Mānoa, with a working studio in New York. Her work communicates on many levels, through the dynamics of temperature, saturation, and focus.

Trained as an architect, Maui artist Don Bernshouse investigates the complexities of the human condition through a variety of materials in drawing, painting, and sculpture, with a focus on the work that transpires, rather than the process of creating.

Tom Lieber has explored abstraction for over 40 years living on Kaua’i, using nature as inspiration in large-scale bold canvases imbued with dynamic gestural marks and a blended moody palette.
