With the introduction of pāhu drums to Hawai'i in the 1100's, the integrity of spiritual expression was elevated. While the people of ancient Hawai'i continued using ipuheke (gourd drums) to accompany hula, eventually the art of pahu leo was mastered. Until 1819, pahu was in full expression. Join Kumu Kalā and Hālau Hula Keao O Kalā for a pahu mele from that era. For those interested in hands-on participation, time and instruction will be provided. Hālau pāhu drums will be available for you to experience first-hand what has nearly slipped away. This evening is part of a once-a-month Thursday night series at the Volcano Art Center, focusing on art, Hawaiian culture and our environment. The series is intended to inspire, enhance your appreciation of art and life experience, while fostering community connections. This presentation is free, although a $5 donation to VAC is greatly appreciated.
