Ceramic Workshop: Creepy Mermaids and Catfish with Esther Shimazu

February 22, 2020 · 10:00AM - 4:00PM

place Big Island > Kailua Kona

Arts & Culture

In this workshop, students will work alongside artist Esther Shimazu to handbuild figurines of human and cat headed sea creatures using classic pottery techniques and small hand tools. Shimazu will demonstrate how she builds animated pottery figures: from teeth and toenails, to getting just the right resonating expression, as she wrestles with clay to achieve something with a life of its own. The result will be a greenware piece with some discussion and demonstration of finishing methods. Students should have prior experience with clay and glaze so you can independently glaze your work after it has been fired.
