Everyone is welcome to join the Hongwanji Buddhist Temples of Maui in celebrating Peace Day 2019 through reflection, meditation, and folding of origami cranes, a symbol of the universal human aspiration for peace and harmony for all people and all forms of life.

Following a Buddhist service officiated by resident minister Rev. Kerry Kiyohara, a walking meditation on the temple grounds will be led by Vietnamese Buddhist Center Chua Tu Hanh as an expression of our theme “Walk in Peace." Craft activities involving origami cranes and wind chimes, videos by Jr. YBA about what peace means to them, and light vegan refreshments will be offered after the walking meditation.

Displayed on the Makawao Buddhist Temple grounds for Peace Day will be thousands of white origami cranes. Members of our temple, ranging in age from great-grandmothers in their 90’s to teenage members of the Junior YBA, folded the cranes with aspirations for peace throughout the world. The origami cranes will be displayed from mid-September until the end of the month.
