Bare is a full-length, coming-of-age, rock musical, in which a group of high school seniors at a Catholic boarding school faces issues of sexuality and personal identity. As they struggle to come to terms with who they are, and who the world thinks they should be, they seek answers from their church, their friends, and ultimately, from within themselves. As their final year of high school draws to a close, they attempt to navigate the complex road from adolescence to adulthood and deal with the consequences of their choices as they prepare to take the next step in their lives.

Bare’s popularity and power stems from its honesty. It resonates with audiences as it provides truthful accounts of the common complexities that young people face. The show inspires, by showcasing the ability to break past the institutions of religion, education and family, that can sometimes force us to conform and hide behind a mask, rather than live a fulfilled life.

Bare received its world premiere staging at the Hudson Mainstage Theater, Hollywood, California on Octoer 14th, 2000. It opened Off Broadway in 2004 and an LA revival was staged in 2013 after multiple productions in cities around the world.

The Hilo production is directed by Dr. Rachel Klein, who says “This is as incredible show. The struggle we see the characters go through in understanding themselves and finding the courage to share their true selves is powerful. This show is an in-depth look at coming of age in today’s society, and it’s a story of coming out and coming to terms with oneself. For the characters, it’s about reconciling who they know they are with their beliefs and what they have been taught. We chose this show because the message is important, and for some people may be life changing. Last year, we brought Hilo ‘Next to Normal’ with tremendous success. Much like this show, the story was difficult, but powerful and helped audience members to face issues and begin discussions about these topics. Our hope is to use art to help people heal in our community. Hilo Community Payer’s is also making an effort to bring contemporary shows forward. For most of our arts community, this is a chance to see a show that has never been done here before.”

The production contains mature language and themes and is not recommended for young children. Parental discretion is advised.
