Seabirds are really cool! For example, did you know that seabirds are ecological engineers? They face crucial challenges at many fronts. In this presentation Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project will provide information about the history, life cycle and important contributions of na manu kai (seabirds). Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project works to protect seabirds and their habitats. They will talk about threats that seabirds endure and describe the work the staff carries out to help restore seabird populations. We will present the results of some of our research and information about volunteering with us to restore seabird habitats and monitor their populations.

Speaker bio:
Jay Penniman has managed the Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project since its inception in 2006. In a former lifetime he was a biologist on Southeast Farallon Island, 28 miles off shore from San Francisco, where he and other biologists and volunteers monitored and studied 12 breeding seabird species, one shorebird, and four marine mammal species. He has also spent time on board ships as a wildlife observer, recording sightings of seabirds and marine mammals. At home Jay manages a harmonious mix of microbes that he coaxes into developing delectable bread, waffles and crackers.
