Service trip to Kipahulu district of Haleakala National Park

The Friends of Haleakala National Park are looking for volunteers to participate in a 3-day, 2-night service trip to take care of vegetation in the Kipahulu district of Haleakala National Park.

A limited number of participants can stay in the bunk house, others will bring their own tents, and all must bring a sleeping bag and pad.

Volunteers can drive within 100ft of the camping area.

Typical Two-Night Service Trip Itinerary*
DAY 1
9:00am: Meet at Foodland Parking Lot in Pukalani. Shop for last-minute items and Community Dinners. Carpool to summit, stopping at Visitors Center and leaving a car at Halemauu Trailhead Lot.
11:00am: Start Hiking
Noon: Lunchtime On the Trail
Afternnon: Arrive at the cabin. Pick a bunk. Time permitting, start Service work.
6:00pm: Pitch in to help prepare dinner & eat

DAY 2
Early am: Watch the sunrise. (don’t wake up your cabin mates)
6:00am: Eat breakfast, pack lunch, water, rain gear, sun protection, tools
8:00am: Hike to location of Service Project and start working! (to be defined)
Noon: Lunch, on the trail or at Service Project site.
5:00pm: Return to cabin
6:00pm: Family Style Dinner.
Evening: Enjoy the stars, the clouds, the crater and sleep!

DAY 3
6:00am: Make & Eat Breakfast
7:00am: Pack up and clean the cabin (everybody)!!!
8:00am: Start hiking! Possibly some service work before, or during the hike.
4:00pm: Arrive at the trailhead. Shuttle to cars at the summit, then head for the showers!
