Kā'anapali Beach Hotel is proud to host Kauluhiwaolele, its second annual Maui Fiber Arts Conference, from September 4-7, 2019. Led by master weaver Pōhaku Kaho'ohanohano from Kahakuloa, Maui and Gayle Miyaguchi, Kā'anapali Beach Hotel's Cultural Resource Specialist, the conference draws master weavers from all over Hawaii to share their expertise during the four-day event. Participants will be immersed in weaving, developing and honing skills and techniques in this ancient Hawaiian art. New and expanded options for weaving classes will include pū hala (hala leaves), 'ie'ie (woody vine woven into baskets), kōkō (knotting sennit to create nets) and 'upena (fish net).
Although classes are for registrants only, the public is welcome to attend the Kauluhiwaolele Festival on Friday and Saturday. Weaving workshops will be held in the lobby for any skill level, in addition to a craft fair. Daily presentations by knowledgeable kumu will cover related fiber arts topics. On Saturday, a silent auction will be held with one-of-a-kind, handmade items, as well as the Celebration of Kauluhiwaolele Fiber Arts with a dinner of local favorites and live Hawaiian music. The deadline for registration is July 31, 2019; late registration after this date will be at an increased rate and subject to availability.
