Hiuwai & E ala E ceremonies
5:45am – 6:30am Honokahua Beach – (D.T. Fleming Beach)
An annual tradition of the Celebration of the Arts. Join cultural practitioners for an invigorating ceremony guaranteed to rejuvenate your body and spirit. Chants are offered by all to the rising sun. Attendees should bring swimwear and towels. Note: Photography and video is prohibited.

Ka Wai A Kane – Private Awa Ceremony
8:00am – 8:45am – Anuenue Room, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua
Hawaiian practitioners and hotel executives sit on the sacred mat to sip the bitter waters of Kane pledging support to all things Hawaiian. Participation by invite only, however public viewing is encouraged. Note: Photography is prohibited.

Wehe ka ipuka…Open the Doorway
9:00am – 10:00am – Lobby, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua
Emotions and spirituality run high as traditional chants of genealogy and the islands are expressed by practitioners asking permission to be a part of the Celebration of the Arts. The Namahana Award of Excellence will be presented to kupuna (elders) who have dedicated their lives to serving the culture.

The Roots of Ulu (film)

Ulu…breadfruit, once a staple of Hawai’i is making a comeback by leaps and bounds. Matt Yamashita of Moloka’i Island captures the essence of its value…both physical and spiritual.

Ulana…to weave
12:30pm – 1:30pm – Hotel Theater, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua
3 practitioners who have perfected the art of weaving through patience and the willingness to listen and learn. Who planted their seeds of knowledge and why do they continue? Sabra Kauka –( Lauhala), Jacob Adolpho (Hawaiian cordage), Pohaku Kahoohanohano (Lauhala hat weaving).

Every solid foundation requires four sturdy and significant cornerstones. These 4 events may have helped to plant the seeds of the Hawaiian renaissance. “Hokule’a” – Kala Babayan-Tanaka; “Hawaiian Immersion Language Program” – Kumu Hokulani Holt; “Merrie Monarch Hula Competition” – Kumu Kamaka Kukona; “The Honokahua Preservation Site” – Dane Uluwehi Maxwell.

Hawaii…Message In The Waves (film)
3:30pm – 5:00pm – Hotel Theater
Produced by The BBC and narrated by Iokepa Nae’ole, this documentary is entertaining, insightful, spiritual and hard-hitting. How much tolerance will the waters and creatures of the ocean absorb with the misuse and carelessness of the human race? This film will bring to the observer a much higher level of awareness and hopefully…concern.

Celebration After-Hours
8pm – 12am – Salons Ballroom , The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua
Let the party begin! 21 years and older. A valid photo ID will be requested at the entrance. No tank tops, board shorts. Footwear is required. If you were here last year…you know how much fun it was. If you missed it…now is your chance! Ticket Pricing TBD.

8:30pm – 10:00pm – From the island of O’ahu and the Tiki Bar in Waikiki…enjoy the fun and talented group “Vaihi.” Don’t miss this appearance.

9:00pm – 11:00pm – The “Rockin Ramen Bar” with all the toppings to satisfy your appetite. $8 per bowl.

10:00pm – 12:00am – Like he did last year…DJ Scotty rocks da house! Be prepared to feel the beat and energize the dance floor.

Community Resilience

A panel of two women who have kept a constant vigil…and sometimes battle…to ensure that the intentions of corporations, politicians and legislation works for the greater good of the community. Tiare Lawrence of Lahaina and Mahina Martin of Wailuku see no borders when it boils down to taking issues to its highest level through community lobbying and public testimony.

The Journey…if you listen, you will see

Richard Roshon, Lecturer, writer/author has often been introduced as the Whale Man, Kayak Man, and Master Story Teller. Richard has logged more than 30,000 miles of kayaking, while during the winter months nights spent at sea Humpback whales lie by his side. Through images and film Richard shares his life with a most intelligent, unique, and sensitive species.

The Napili Kai Hula Foundation

Kumu Hula Holoaumoku Ralar and musicians assemble one of the longest reigning hula schools on Maui to entertain for you. Always a treat to see!

The New Age of Looking Backwards

There is a poetic saying that goes “we will know where we are going…only by knowing where we went.” Two Kane of Hawai’i are consistently turning to the past to shape the future. They realize that they are the seeds of knowledge that were planted eons ago and gifted to be guided by the wisdom of their ancestors. Now it is their turn to sow the soil of the Nation of Hawai’i. Kyle Nakanelua and Ke’eaumoku Kapu have pledged 7 generations of seeds to the service of Hawai’i. Come and listen and hopefully…you will become the keepers of the seeds in your own way.

8:30pm – 10:00pm – The long anticipated CD Release party for Maui’s own “Ahumanu!” Joining their angelic harmony and musical skills will be one of Maui’s (and the state’s) hottest new bands, Na Wai Eha. And…another up and coming group called Kuikawa. All this combined with the hula skills of Halau Hula Na hanona kulike o Pi’ilani; Pa’u of Hi’iaka; Kamaluokaleihulu: and Kekuaokala’au ala ‘iliahi! This segment will be CLASSIC.

9:00pm – 11:00pm – Hawaiian Plate pupu will be sold to satisfy the appetite.

10:00pm – 12:00am – It’s time to dance the night away with the big band sound of Maui’s own Jimmy Mac & The Kool Kats. They have entertained some of the largest conventions in the islands with their contemporary and classic beats. “A song and a dance to please everyone.” This will be the finale of The Celebration of the Arts and it’ll be one for the memory banks.
