On a Sunday evening in 2001, shortly after the opening of Mulligan’s on The Blue in Wailea, Hawaii, a group of musicians met for the first time. They sat together, instruments in hand, around a table by the bar and began playing. Trading off tunes with no rehearsal they drew such attention that the following week a microphone had to be hung over the table just so they could be heard over the screams and applause. Mike O’Dwyer, the bar owner, jokingly referred to them as “Celtic Tigers”, after the Irish economic boom- and a band was born.

Since then, Maui’s own Celtic Tigers have evolved into a true phenomenon, pleasing audiences with an infectious blend of classic traditional and contemporary Celtic rock music, which at times has featured players from around the globe. In 2008 the band released a live album titled “ROAR” that captured the live energy of their weekly shows on Maui, which also featured Kevin O’Kennedy on tin whistle. Today, their energetic presence still keeps toes tapping and hands clapping, making it hard to resist the urge to sing along. Each performance is an homage to the spirit of the first gathering around the table, bringing audiences back week after week- and year after year- and making them arguably one of the longest running weekly shows on the island of Maui!

Far from being a conventional Celtic group, the band’s unique style owes itself to the diverse musical backgrounds of the core members who have remained a consistent force over the years. The Celtic Tigers are:

MURRAY THORNE
Murray is a singer/songwriter, recording artist, guitarist and frontman for the Celtic Tigers. Known by many for his energetic stage presence, he has been with the band since it formed in 2001. With over 30 years’ experience as an entertainer, Murray has performed all over North America both as a solo artist and with major label recording acts, including tour opening dates for Aerosmith, Iggy Pop and the Georgia Satellites. He has also acted in theater & television. When he is not performing with the Celtic Tigers, Murray has a prolific career as a solo rock performer. In 2009 he released a studio album titled “Tin Can Telephone” and is also known for his show “In The Flesh”, a solo performance of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”.

WILLY WAINWRIGHT
Willy is a violinist who began playing the violin as a child in Chicago, Illinois. He is an accomplished musician and charismatic performer whose has mastered many styles throughout the years including classical, country, bluegrass, jazz and Irish. He has performed and toured with internationally known artists. Career highlights include performing shows at the White House, Grand Ol’ Opry, The Johnny Carson Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Farm Aid. Willy also plays in the groups ‘Weatherly-Wainwright’ with his wife Jennifer Weatherly and the Maui based Gypsy Jazz group, Gypsy Pacific. He has also released solo albums that feature many of his personal favorites. Willy is the original fiddler for the Celtic Tigers and the band recently celebrated his return.

KRIS THOMAS
Kris is a drummer/percussionist, engineer, and producer. He is a master of contemporary drumming styles such as funk, rock, reggae, worldbeat, and salsa. Since moving to Maui in 1998, he as worked, performed and jammed with numerous iconic world famous artists including Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac), Steven Tyler (Aerosmith), Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) Prince, and many shows withWillie Nelson and The Planetary Bandits in Hawaii and Texas. Along with drumming for the Celtic Tigers since shortly after the band formed, Kris has also been stunning audiences for almost 20 years with legendary Hawaiian artist, Uncle Willie K. Kris also writes and records his own music, which has been featured in video soundtracks.
