One of Hawaii’s most experienced conflict resolution specialists, Peter Adler, PhD., will lead a talk-story in Kona on Saturday, August 24 from 5-6:30pm.

The event is part of West Hawaii Mediation Center’s ongoing “Conflict Stories” community education series. August’s talk-story, titled “Getting Beyond Adversarial Politics” will be held at Privateer’s Cove Community center on Hualalai Rd. The event will explore ideas, examples, and strategies to engage and move through an increasingly divisive political climate.

Dr. Adler will offer examples of improbable political relationships. He will examine where in the State and County we appear to be stuck, and how we might tame our conflict-ridden political environment.

“Civil dialogue and collaborative relationships appear to be declining,” said WHMC Executive Director Eric Paul. “This is as true nationally as it is locally on Hawai‘i Island. Our ongoing Conflict Stories events aim to foster greater awareness of community challenges, and to create a space to imagine how they can be resolved. I’ve seen families no longer on speaking terms because of the rise of partisan division.

“We want to connect neighbors and introduce them to local experts who understand the conflicts that emerge in our community," Paul said. "I can’t think of a better topic to discuss as elections draw near, corruption cases have surfaced in the state, and conversations around how we use our land and resources continue to dominate our newsfeeds.”

Dr. Adler helped establish Hawaii‘s original community mediation centers. He is a planner, mediator, facilitator, and a principal in Accord Network 3.0, http://www.accord3.com/pg99.cfm, a professional network specializing in foresight, strategy, and cooperative troubleshooting. He has taught advanced negotiation courses at the University of Hawai‘i and is a former Executive Director of the Hawai‘i Justice Foundation. He is the founding Director of the Hawai‘i Supreme Court’s Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution.

Thanks to the generosity of donated space by Privateer’s Cove, this event is free to the public; however, donations will be gladly accepted to further the service of mediation and conflict resolution in West Hawai‘i.
